I thought this sounded pretty cool! Alas, my experience went as follows:

- Installed
- Selected some files
- Right-clicked and selected to burn

When I got to the 'Select a Disc Recorder' dialog, there were no burners in the list. (Yes, of course I have one).

I've got a Dell XPS M140 running Win XP/SP3. The burner is the one that came standard with it -- I don't really know much about it, but it shows up in the device manager as 'HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4244'.

I will grant that I've got a fair amount of off-the-beaten-path software installed, but none of it has ever stopped my burner from being seen before.

:-(

This may be caused by insufficient privileges of your account in Windows XP.

Please read the following MSDN article: Providing User Permissions for Media Burning Devices, which may help you.

Normally those permissions should have been set by the installer, but maybe something went wrong.

Hi. Thanks for the quick response.

I didn't think this was likely the problem, as I am the administrator. There's only one user of this machine, and I'm it. All the same, I followed the steps outlined in the article you referenced, and it didn't seem to affect the outcome; my burner still does not show up in Explore&Burn's list.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should add the following: When I install Explore&Burn, I am doing so in a virtual environment created by an app called Returnil (http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/products). I always do this when I install new software, so that if I decide right away I wish I hadn't, I can back out cleanly. Any reason to think this would be affecting Explore&Burn's ability to see the burner? Running under Returnil has never seemed to affect an application's ability to work properly before, though I don't recall ever trying to access the CD burner while doing so. I just tried running another burning app I've got (Burrrn), and it seems to see the device fine while under Returnil.

I think the problem is in your virtual environment.

I do Explore&Burn development on Windows 7 machine. So to test Explore&Burn under Windows XP I'm also use virtual machine. I prefer VirtualBox.

IMAPI, which Explore&Burn uses as the burning engine, sends low-level commands to the burner to do its job (and all other CD/DVD burning software do the same).

By default VM blocks these commands and IMAPI thinks that your DVD-RW drive is a read-only DVD-ROM device, and does not include it to the list of supported devices.

I need to explicitly enable "Passthrough" mode in VirtualBox VM settings for this DVD device, to let the IMAPI directly communicate with it.

Don't know for sure if this is a case for Returnil, but most likely - yes.

So although Burrrn sees your DVD drive. most likely it will fail if you try to burn something.

Hi. Thanks again.

I don't know much about either Returnil's virtual environment, nor about accessing the CD-R/W. I'm inclined to think you're right.

I don't run Returnil regularly; the only reason I ever use it is to try out new software without risk of cluttering my system with something I don't end up wanting. If Explore&Burn has a clean uninstall, I'm cheerful to try installing it outside of Returnil's virtual environment and see if the problem goes away.
